Ray came around the corner into the living room as Gertrude was rushing toward the screen door.
“What is that?” He shouted over the clamor. 
Instead of answering, Gertrude shoved open the screen and screamed Kiddo’s name as she ran toward the pond.  A spume of roiling bubbles covered the surface of the water.  Gertrude fell to her knees at the edge of the pond and thrust her hand into the water.  A second later, Ray was there, jumping into the pond.
